Sound Of The Week: Once Twice

Meet Once Twice, the electrifying London-based duo making waves in the electronic music scene with their latest single, “Extisis,” which serves as the grand finale of their much-anticipated debut EP, Movement, released today. Since joining forces in 2021, Once Twice have been meticulously crafting their sound over the past four years, initially sharing intimate tracks exclusively with their close-knit circle online. Gradually, they expanded their reach, connecting with a burgeoning fanbase on Discord before unveiling their inaugural official single, “Deep Breath,” in April of last year. Rooted in the dynamic landscape of the UK underground, their musicality is a vibrant blend of emotion and environment, deftly merging elements of club culture, ambient textures, and synth explorations that defy conventional genre boundaries.

With the release of Movement, Once Twice inject a palpable sense of place and character into their artistry, reflecting their unique creative journey. This four-track collection of rich electronica showcases sincerity while staying deeply connected to club rhythms—offering listeners an archived glimpse into evocative electronic spaces. “We’re super excited to finally have this EP out!” the duo shares, “Super excited to have this EP out! We wanted to explore the club experience, inspired by states of euphoria, intense panic, and the shifting states in between. It sounds good loud and hopefully is fun to dance to also.”

The EP features previously released tracks, including “Deep Breath,” “Movement,” and “Warm,” culminating with the electrifying “Extisis.” The opening track, “Deep Breath,” is a pulsating club anthem that seamlessly intertwines tranquillity and vitality—a perfect find-your-zen tune amidst the frenetic energy of the dancefloor. Following this, “Movement” introduces a new layer of rapid-fire drums paired with introspective vocals, capturing the chaos of life’s unpredictability with poignant lyrics: “Now that you are all here / is it easier to love me?”

As the EP progresses, it shifts gears with “Warm,” a spiritually charged club track infused with gospel echoes and a nostalgic 50s doo-wop sample, further exploring the euphoric sound they are becoming renowned for, enhanced by elements of futuristic soul. Extisis, the final track, is a jubilant homage to their journey thus far—a feverish rush of chopped and screwed beats that encapsulates the joy of music creation and communal experience.

Having shared stages with luminaries like Maceo Plex, TSHA, and Jamie xx, Once Twice have effortlessly garnered a devoted following across airwaves such as BBC Radio 6, Foundation FM, Rinse FM, and SWU FM, alongside electrifying local performances at All Points East, Field Day, FOLD, The Glove That Fits, and The Pickle Factory. Their sound, a fusion of synth, ambient, techno, and club influences, embodies a revivalist spirit reminiscent of Skee Mask’s Compro, the mind-melting compositions of Ludwig A.F., and the expansive creativity of Call Super—showcasing a duo propelled by pure feeling that belies their DIY beginnings.
