Gregory Douglass deliberately and unapologetically steps outside the mould. Although his forthcoming album is titled AMATEUR, the word hardly describes someone with 25 years of experience. Instead, the title speaks to his willingness to keep learning, reconsider old ideas, and reconnect with what initially drew him to music.
The singer-songwriter has shared stages with Grace Potter, Jason Mraz, Regina Spektor, Patty Griffin, They Might Be Giants, and fellow Vermont artist Anaïs Mitchell (Hadestown). He has also released 10 studio albums, toured internationally, and had his song Alibis featured in the Netflix series The Rain in 2019. He has accomplished all of this independently, without the backing of a major label or an extensive professional team.
Douglass is now preparing to release his eleventh studio album and his first collection of original material in nearly a decade. Built around piano, voice, strings, and bass, the project explores queer identity, open relationships, childhood memories, artistic survival, and the gradual process of learning to love oneself again. Its intimate chamber-pop arrangements find him reassessing ambition, personal exposure, and his relationship with music.
The single Bespoke offers the first glimpse into this new chapter. Gentle and inviting, the track brings together haunting piano, subtle strings, and soulful vocal delivery. The lyrics reinforce its emotional openness, allowing its reflections on desire and vulnerability to unfold without excessive embellishment.
The track inhabits the delicate space between intimacy and illusion. It reflects on an emotionally complex relationship with someone who became both muse and mirror, revealing the beauty and heartbreak that can coexist within a connection. With emotional clarity and compassion, the artist confronts internalised shame and begins to reclaim desire without denying the vulnerability involved.
These tensions extend beyond the song into AMATEUR, an album partly shaped by his recent years in Palm Springs, California, where queer culture, sexuality, and community led him to reconsider long-held ideas about love, shame, and authenticity.
Bespoke begins a series of singles scheduled for release throughout 2026, ahead of the album’s arrival in November. The song leaves room for uncertainty, capturing an artist reconsidering how he measures creative fulfilment after decades of independent work.
