The Gentlewoman Issue No. 11 Starring The Spectacular Sonic Genius Björk

The Gentlewoman magazine unveiled the cover of its new issue for Spring and Summer 2015 today, starring the iconic, multi-talented artist Björk Guðmundsdóttir. In the run-up to the release of her 9th studio album, Vulnicura, Björk invited the renowned New York-based writer Vanessa Grigoriadis to her home in Reykjavik, Iceland to discuss the new album’s creation, the heartbreak that inspired it, and learn of plans for Björk’s forthcoming major exhibition at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, due to open on 8th March 2015.

Björks name has been on our list since we started talking about making The Gentlewoman,” said Penny Martin, the magazine’s editor in chief. ” It was always a case of ‘not if but when’, so this year, with the release of Vulnicura, and especially

her exhibition at MoMA next month, seems an ideal time. Considering her incredible use of image, we were extremely touched to learn that she wanted to enter into our image-world, and allow us to represent her so candidly, as a gentlewoman. We’re absolutely thrilled with the results.”

The interview is accompanied by an intimate and personal portfolio of portraits of the beloved musician and singer by the esteemed British photographer Alasdair McLellan.

Growing up, I was a fan of Björk’s, I love her music, but I’d never photographed her,” explained McLellan. “Obviously, she has such a strong visual legacy – you feel like you know her so well – but I wanted to approach the sitting in an honest way. She’s such a special person, so charming and warm, you want to make sure you capture that in the pictures. You want them to look like her.”

Joining Björk in this eleventh edition of The Gentlewoman are 21 additional international women of note. The American multi-tasking creative force Miranda July; Scottish motor-racing dynamo Susie Wolff; the affable British aristocrat Raine, Countess Spencer; Hollywood film director Ava DuVernay; the sublime actress from Bolton Maxine Peake; folk stars and Watford’s favourite daughters The Staves; political impresario and acting-CEO of the Clinton Foundation, Maura Pally and the sensational Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen all feature along with a specially-commissioned portfolio of work by the wondrous Latvian artist Ella Kruglyanskaya.

These in-depth interviews, chatty articles and lively features are interleaved with fantastic fashion stories and thoughtful sartorial expositions, while essays on how to be a better guest and fastidious case studies on delightful everyday minutiae all provide fun perspectives on modern living.
