photo by Gianni GallantCarried by a warm, unhurried voice that flows effortlessly like a calm river, singer and songwriter Jaymin releases his new EP “STATIC,” an 11-track collection filled with timelessness, delicate elements, and an irresistible, sensual mood reminiscent of the R&B stars who immortalised the genre throughout the ’90s and 2000s and whose magnetism is rarely replicated in today’s releases.
Dramatic and gentle at the same time, “If I’m Away” opens the album with an unresolved quality, leaving its notes suspended as the singer’s signature voice moves lightly through the intensity.
“Crash” soon joins the tracklist with a cabaret-inspired sound reminiscent of the 1950s, preceding “Rain,” a song that introduces vinyl crackle to turn the nostalgia surrounding the release up to a thousand from beginning to end.
Co-produced by Sango (Frank Ocean and Bryson Tiller) and his frequent collaborator Chase N. Cashe (Drake and Lil Wayne), “Rollin” stands out in the selection. The song explores the doubt that emerges in relationships when there is no clarity about where things are headed.
“Proud” also stands out for its approach to the struggles of romantic relationships, something anyone can relate to. Produced by Hollywood Cole (Isaiah Rashad, Jack Harlow) and Ayex (Trippie Redd, Wallie the Sensei), the track received support from Sleeping On Gems and Rated R&B.
With the same grounding in R&B at its purest, the tracklist continues with the softness of “What’s It Worth,” followed by “cc,” “Psalm,” “This Side of Paris,” and, finally, “Red Eye,” which brings the cohesive and distinctive release to a close.
The concept behind the EP’s title serves as its connecting thread. Static represents the friction that emerges when two people stop understanding each other, but also the noise of a weakened signal that is still trying to find its frequency.
“On every one of these songs, I’m fighting through static,” says Jaymin. “The whole project is about the walls caving in around love, and what you do to hold them up. I want people to sit with those uncomfortable conversations. I want people to feel everything, just like I did.”
Born in South Seattle, the artist has made a name for himself on the local scene through singles such as “Something Real,” which brought his romantic, nocturnal sound to a wider audience, while the EP “Sweet Nothings,” also released in 2026, allowed him to further establish an aesthetic that blends contemporary sensitivity with elements of ’80s and ’90s R&B and New Jack Swing.
Raised in a family closely connected to the church, Jaymin began singing as a child alongside his siblings, surrounded by both gospel and soul. Years later, while attending college and working as a model for brands such as Nike and Adidas, he continued learning instruments, developing his songwriting, and defining a voice of his own, eventually earning recognition from specialised media and appearing on songs by artists including Sango, Girlfriend, and rjtheweirdo.
“STATIC” brings all of these qualities together in a cohesive, intimate project willing to examine love after its initial glow has faded, an EP bearing Jaymin’s signature from beginning to end. It finds depth in the less comfortable moments of a relationship and wraps them in 11 songs that are impossible not to connect with.
