Ahead of their forthcoming album Imagine Life out October 16th, Finnish alternative electronic artist Detalji unveils their latest single, “Drifting.” Moving between dreamlike synths, alternative pop melodies, and club influences, the new track serves as the emotional centre of an album written across Helsinki, Los Angeles, and Berlin during a year of transition, heartbreak, and reinvention.
Reflecting a departure from the club-centric framework of Detalji’s earlier work, Imagine Life prioritizes songwriting, atmosphere, and vocal expression. The album captures the tension between reality and imagination, exploring themes of longing, desire, and connection across Nordic melancholy and gritty electronic textures.
On “Drifting,” Detalji explores the painful necessity of closure, translating emotional weight into a dynamic, evolving production. “One of my favorites,” Detalji shares. “It’s about having no other choice but to end a relationship because it just doesn’t work anymore, and how painful all that is. I had a lot of fun with the instrumental here and sampling my vocals. The first draft was way more laid-back, but after many revisions it became a progressive DNB explosion where the sadness of letting go evolves into a powerful release and gathers together many other emotions.”
Building from understated beginnings into a soaring drum and bass climax, “Drifting” encapsulates the core spirit of Imagine Life, where sadness evolves into liberation and uncertainty finds a sense of beauty.
