Track Premiere: kuru – ‘never gets better’

February 2022 sees DC artist kuru release his first proper EP, a six-tracker titled splitting time on Cascine Records. ‘never gets better’ closes the EP with a twilit meditation on hopelessness and heartbreak. It’s one of the sparsest songs of the bunch, it’s also one of the most effective. Skittering drums dance across a heaving bassline. Keys drip like diamonds and kuru is emotionally bare.

‘never gets better’ is a song I made about 4 months ago about falling out with old friends. I made it during a pretty rough time, and tried my best to express that raw emotion through melodic vocals accompanied by my friends’ tgwog and litothedon’s slow paced beat.

What began solely as a bedroom project gently expanded as kuru allied with a global community of collaborators, some of which included d0llywood1, angelus, Blackwinterwells, waifu, litothedon, MISOGI and ginseng. Initially meeting on Discord servers and Soundcloud, kuru has since distanced himself from digital platforms as the primary way of connecting with people, focusing on growing personal relationships IRL. This often entails his crew of friends descending on Los Angeles, Atlanta or D.C. for weekend writing sessions.

Over the course of 12 loose singles in two years, kuru’s sound continues to coalesce. Most of the material has been self released and always features friends. blackwinterwells, ericdoa and kurtains make regular appearances.
