A two-part SWR documentary celebrates cultures and their communities / from May 8, 2023, in the ARD media library. “Celebrate Culture – Black SHeroes” focuses on the positive aspects of multiculturalism and diversity. The protagonists, four black women who create culture, show their personal heroine journey to their successes and their art.masters of their trade Thelma Buabeng, Nikeata Thompson, Sonia Mannette and Jumoke Adeyanju are four successful women artists who have become well-known in their fields. The documentary tells about her art: comedy, drama, music and dance. The artists look at their life’s work and explain how their personal stories are influenced by their culture and how this has enriched their work as artists.
The visibility of BPoC in society
The film examines how Thelma Buabeng deals with clichés in her comedy, how Jumoke Adeyanju establishes her “poetry meets hip-hop” in the scene and why the birth of her daughter was essential for Sonia Mannette’s career as a writer. An empowering feel-good format with a special focus on self-empowerment and celebration that presents new aspects of the life of intercultural people in Germany. “Why the Black SHeroes project appealed to me because it is about the success of a Black woman in Europe. It’s never exposed like that. It’s emotional for me,” explains Nikeata Thompson, who campaigns, among other things, for the visibility of Black People of Color and diversity in society.

“Celebrate Culture – Black SHeroes” is a Flow Media Company production commissioned by SWR. Both 45-minute episodes of the documentary by Claire Forrester and Ruby-Ann Schwiethal can be seen in the ARD Mediathek from May 8th. www.ardmediathek.de
