BED is a Berlin-based band that was founded by Argentinian bass player Sol Astolfi and Chilean vocalist Nicolás Astorga in 2021. After engaging in initial experimentation and writing sessions, they invited German guitarist Ema Schiller to join them. At its core, BED is a queer musical project that draws inspiration from various genres, including shoegaze, dream pop, and post-punk. Their lyrics explore themes of sadness and sexuality, combining vulnerability and desire in a way that challenges normative creative expression.
One notable aspect of BED’s music is their intentionally gender-ambiguous vocalizations, which reflect a fluid identity throughout the album. Drawing inspiration from influential musicians like Liz Harris (Grouper), Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine), Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins), Courtney Love (Hole), and Bowery Electric, BED weaves together iconic elements of the 90s music scene with ambient textures influenced by the Berlin rave culture.
On their upcoming release, BED collaborated with electronic music producer Cybermission, who contributed drums and synth on their first single. Titled “Everything Hurts,” this song serves as an introduction to the intimate and glistening universe of BED. It can be interpreted as both an angelic cry for help and a swan song to mend a broken relationship or heal a broken heart.
The music video for “Everything Hurts” evokes feelings of pre-adolescent rage and loneliness. It portrays an underaged heroine who navigates the city, behaving beyond her years. The video captures the essence of an interrupted childhood, showcasing a precocious girl who must take care of herself as she ventures through Berlin. With visuals reminiscent of coming-of-age movies, the video delves into the character’s universe, showcasing glimpses of her diaries as she writes and dances in her bedroom. The video stars young talent Alba Corda and was created by BED’s founders Astorga and Astolfi, with additional camera work by Letu Salvi. The editing was done by Felix Schütze, and the colour grading was handled by Meghan Tomeo-Lohmüller.
