“Sweet Lullabies” is a masterclass in cinematic pop tension. Imagine stepping into a David Lynch fever dream coated in a hyper-saturated pink gloss. The track carries the distinct, intoxicating scent of lipstick, stale cigarette smoke, burnt rubber, and half-empty Cosmopolitans on a crowded dance floor. It is undeniably immediate, driving, and glossy—yet underneath the pop euphoria lies a thrilling darkness. The verses hang in the air like unfinished sentences, leaving you suspended in a beautiful, eerie limbo.
“This song started as a very ambitious experiment for my Dad and I, and we had no idea it would turn into a dance track,” Coco reveals. “I love that it feels so undeniably pop, but if you listen closer, it has this sinister, surreal undertone. Something’s not quite right… I was imagining a character almost like Ursula in The Little Mermaid, luring you into a world you may never leave.”
The DIY visual for the track—envisioned, filmed, and edited entirely by Coco herself—perfectly mirrors this duality. We are led down a neon-pink staircase into the shadows, watching reality dissolve into a surreal disco trip. Serving as the opening statement for Modern Lover Girl, “Sweet Lullabies” is the exact moment of being pulled under. Coco’s path to becoming one of the most exciting new voices in alt-pop wasn’t a straight line. Though she grew up surrounded by music—her father worked as a sound engineer and producer, giving her a front-row seat to the studio world from a young age—she initially kept her songwriting a secret. Instead, she cut her teeth across the creative spectrum, exploring dance, acting, comedy writing, and copywriting (a background that clearly informs her razor-sharp lyricism). It was only during the lockdown isolation that she returned home, teamed up with her father, and finally brought Coco and the Lost to life.
The result of that cross-disciplinary journey is a sound that feels entirely three-dimensional. Her universe draws as much from the theatricality of classic musicals and Lady Gaga as it does from the raw, introspective visual art of Tracey Emin and Louise Bourgeois, and the unsettling cinematic nature of Lynch.
