Video Premiere: EuroEyez – ‘Dalnim (달님)’

Cologne-based Safe Space Records introduce EuroEyez to their roster with the nostalgic, euro-dance single and video for ‘Dalnim (달님)’. ‘Dalnim | 달님’ (Korean for moon) is a song for the moon and an ode to the night. On her first single on Safe Space Records, EuroEyez reinterprets the classic Korean tale Haenim Dalnim in a contemporary context over a gloomy but upbeat dance track. Haenim Dalnim is a story of two siblings escaping imminent danger and seeking refuge in the sky by transforming into the celestial bodies we now call the sun and the moon. EuroEyez weaves the siblings’ story into a contemporary tale of nocturnal escapism and the idea of nighttime transforming not only the environment but offering space for personal transformation as well.

These themes are also reflected in the track’s production. While Dalnim’s catchy plucked strings and bouncing bass line invite you to dance and sing along (you’ll need to speak Korean in order to nail the entire lyrics), the misty pads and the glistening piano give it an air of mysticism. “I think the night and the moon are fascinating for a lot of people. The night also allows you to jump into different personas and be something you would usually hide during the day. That was kind of the inspiration for the lyrics. I transformed myself into the character during the writing process and celebrate that with you in the song,” explains EuroEyez.

“So ‘Dal Nim’ is our take on Korean Euro-Dance songs from the late 90s, and early 2000s. The music video is visually inspired by a live performance of Lee Jung-Hyun’s song “와(wa)” from 1999.

It’s a typical euro-dance*ish live performance with screeching fans, background dancers, and dynamic camera angles, but the looks felt very unique: traditional Korean dresses such as Hanboks and hairstyles mixed with present-day pop elements. It felt like something we wanted to try ourselves. That was the foundation of the concept, and everyone involved interpreted this vision in their own way, which made the result so special.

For that, we are super thankful to have worked with such talented people who we could trust in their own visions. A big thank you to Safe Space Records, Insa Wagner, Hendrik Novak, and Atu Gelovani for their outstanding work.” -Noah-Jinu Moerbeck (Director, concept)

“The whole crew had the idea to create a moon-like environment for some science fiction vibes. I just tried to get Yerin’s and Noah’s thoughts to the screen. My projects are always a collaboration between the artist and my vision.

We planned and created beautiful settings with Isabelle Edi and had the best styling, hair, and make-up crew with nails by Insa Wagner, looks by Hendrik Nowak, and jewelry by Atu Gelovani and Odassey. Together with the lighting crew, Tim Pfrötschner and Philipp Kroll, we worked on the project for two shooting days. One day, Yerin and the dancers performed, and on the second day, we shot the narrative parts. The editing process took a few days, and we had great graphics by Maxi Schmid. Special thanks also to Keyvan Khatiri and Anton Geissmar.” – Lars Zimmermann (Director, editor, and camera)

EuroEyez (aka Yerin Moerbeck) is a 90s baby born and raised in Hamburg, Germany by Korean parents. By day, she runs a vegan Korean restaurant in the Sternschanze. At night she transforms into a (for now) underground pop star. When the pandemic hit and the lockdowns alleviated Yerin of her busy restaurant routine, she started working on songs in collaboration with her producer and brother (yes, just like in the tale) jinO.o. Inspired by their Korean background and influenced by Pop, R&B, Jungle, and Trance, the two siblings naturally started making music together. Their vision came to life when they were asked to do a live stream for a collective they were part of. Watching many livestream DJ sets during the lockdown days, the siblings saw an opportunity to experiment with performance, covering Korean pop songs from the 1970s-2010s. Realizing they were a great team and understood each other’s visions, they wrote her debut single, “I C U (In My Dreams).” After the single and self-produced video release, jinO.o and EuroEyez played a couple of concerts and joined the Hamburg-based collective OneMother.

‘Dalnim| 달님’ will release digitally on Bandcamp and all streaming platforms on Jan 20th, 2023. Pre-order it here: https://safespacerecords.bandcamp.com/album/ssr016-euroeyez-dalnim
