Video Premiere: Heidi Sabertooth – ‘It Says You Read It’

Heidi Sabertooth premieres the video for the single ‘It Says You Read It’ taken from the split EP The Sleep of Reason with Drakkar Noir (R Gamble). The NYC-based artists collaborate together in many capacities, primarily as residents of the Lost Soul Enterprises label and collective, which spotlights analog experiments and mutant sounds past and present: wave, electro, body music, and all things in between. The Sleep of Reason is inspired by the famous Goya etching The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters and is intended as both a homage to a visionary artist and a reflection that the sentiment in the artwork resonates particularly today. The split EP showcases two well-seasoned artists flexing a mastery of their machines, delivering subterranean electro, techno, noise, and experimental electronics. Gritty, murky basslines meet squelching melodies and alien vocals, all with the vibrant, present, live-wire energy of a hardware set performed in a smoky, crowded basement, rather than programmed within the confines of a studio. “This collection of songs is a more intimate offering – but far from soft,” says Heidi. “A channeling of angst and disenchantment about relationships, technology, and expectations of the modern femme. Distorted analog hardware, tart acid, and icy digital vocals accompany a funhouse mirror reflection of self, addiction, and the pursuit of not being bored. All were made with hardware-based synths and drum machines in my home studio in Brooklyn, NY.”

The video for ‘It Says You Read It’ is one of two clips made as a collaboration between the artists and filmmaking team L:A:P:S:E (Carbon Anderson + Virginia de las Pozas). The videos were both made during the late summer of 2020 COVID lockdown in desolate parts of Bushwick and Coney Island, Brooklyn NY. Shot in the middle of the night (or what would have been post-club early morning after hours), they reveal an urban landscape that is eerily empty and capture the pensiveness of that extraordinary time – will darkness break into dawn?

From L:A:P:S:E: “L:A:P:S:E is a collaborative, freeform multimedia project. We most often make music-adjacent narrative works and graphic design. These videos are a reflection, refraction of Heidi and R.’s visions. In our eyes and through our lens: Heidi’s metallic, slippery vocals legibly shatter the viewscreen, playfully embodying a peculiar screen-era rumination. It says you read it voices the dislocated emotions of the chat bubble. We wove temporary metallic jewelry from which to suspend apple cores–an extravagant extension of the body and its ephemeral desires. The target is removed and the apple consumed. She’s not waiting for your response. Drakkar Noir Shadow Reel follows R. Gamble as an earth-bound transplant stumbling across the city coastline, frames stretching and contracting with extraterrestrial tension. He speaks of an a-b-s-e-n-c-e, embedded in a psychedelic barrage of imagery–a reptile queen, death’s highway. The video echoes this voided dreamscape, R. himself a persona in a lost sci-fi comic strip. The companion videos encrypt and bloom around a thread woven into their pairing.”

The Sleep of Reason will be released on May 7th via Jacktone Records
