Video Premiere: Holymachines & Aquiet – ‘Brainless Highbrows’

KALTBLUT is excited to present Aquiet’s new video for Holymachines’ track ‘Brainless Highbrows’, taken from their latest album release, Image Version. Image Version is an audio-visual collaboration between Berlin-based musician and sound artist Holymachines (Chris Hill) and Aquiet (Sven Stratmann), a director, motion designer, and video artist, based in Münster, Germany. Berlin-based label collective, Average Negative released a unique USB Multimedia package, with limited prints and digital formats on April 1st, in support of the collaborative element of the album release. With Image Version, Holymachines approaches his art through a method, which he refers to as “genre observation”. Rather than cutting influences wholesale from contemporary culture, he absorbs smaller fragmentary snatches, deconstructing them and reassembling them as bold new sonic gestures. This process results in sonic artefacts, that meander between ambient, noise and collage.

Image Version is not an easy album. It is a mind-bending journey, glancing at ambient music through a broken lens and stripping it of it’s comforting qualities. Paired with Aquiet’s visuals, it’s a bold and relentless exploration into the essence of our reality, and aims to relay this scattered nature right back at you. In talking about the concept of the film, Sven said the following: “This animation I created for ‘Brainless Highbrows’ was very much inspired by some research I did on neural networks. The whole sculpture consists of thousands of particles moving around themselves, but they following an underlying microtiming that leads them to the predestined closing formation in the end. I like that resolving moment, when you realize that all these chaotic structures have always led to this big picture that makes sense.”
