Video Premiere: Joy Wellboy – ‘Sweet Love’

Berlin’s Joy Wellboy premiere their latest new single and video for the sublime ‘Sweet Love’ on local label Klub Kid Records. Founder Sherø heard the demo version for the first time in 2019 when the duo sent a demo album to pitch for a remix and was immediately drawn to the catchy vocals. The same year Joy also performed the track guided by just the bass in a private setting, when both of them were visiting relatives in Belgium and Sherø stayed the night at Joy’s mum’s. “I was almost in tears, the vocals are so intense and beautiful,” Sherø explains on the experience. “To share this cute intermezzo with her family was just pure magic”. Joy adds, “Sherø and I first talked about releasing something new together when we were sitting on the beach in Berlin, two summers ago… She did not have her label back then. We were both enthusiastic about the idea. When Covid 19 started, we continued to support each other’s work a lot. It took a while before we found the right moment for the song to be released. Somehow the timing feels perfect right now. ‘Sweet Love’ came to light several years ago when everything was pitch black and I had no place to go. Since then, it has been my lullaby for comfort and my favorite anthem for strength. Words were easily caught as if written in the sky. It’s a matter of trust, sometimes you just have to wait until stars align, lookup, read and pin down.”

On the video, Joy says: “Wim and I love to make our own videoclips. In the past, we challenged each other into the weirdest scenarios. It had been a while since we edited some new footage. Covid 19 did put a lot of stuff on hold. I’m usually very much one with my own body. I know how I want to move and in what direction. Being pregnant for the first time I found myself in unknown territory. I was very blocked and uncomfortable in the sixth month, never had that much questions coming to me. Wim told me I should dance. I would find myself back if I danced. And so that’s what I did. I felt much better after the shooting.”

Joy Adegoke and Wim Janssens met in Brussels. Summer of 2009. That’s when Joy Wellboy was founded. They soon realized that they share a vision on how to record music and begin to document their journey. Always eager for more excitement, just to catch some inspiration. Eventually, interesting stories follow. During a 3 month stay in California, they start to make videos of live performances for unreleased songs in deserted landscapes like Death Valley, Twin Peaks, and Joshua Tree Park. They manage to create a universe with one microphone, a small amp, and a video camera. It’s attracting more people to their music. Bookers in Belgium, France, and Germany catch their vibes and are pleased to add them to their rosters.

Since their first concert in 2010, Joy Wellboy rapidly moved on from the local scene in Brussels to stages all over Europe. They played with Morcheeba, Alt-J, Eiffel, Angus Stone, Kimbra, Selah Sue, Sohn, and James Blake as a support band and headlined club tours from France to Poland, Germany to Italy, and everywhere in between on Melt! booking.

In 2013, they swapped their beloved hometown Brussels for Berlin. Moving to Germany helps to build their audience and brings their music to the ears of the groundbreaking label, Bpitch Control, home to bands like Apparat, Modeselektor, Paul Kalkbrenner, and Dillon. Ellen Allien instantly falls for their music and signs the duo in 2013. Joy Wellboy’s debut “Yorokobi’s Mantra” was released in 2013, the EP “Before The Sunrise” in 2014, and the album “Wedding” in 2015. In that period, they are invited to play on popular festivals and Events (Berlin Fashion Week, Green Fashion Week, Fusion, and Melt! Festival in Germany, Dour Festival in Belgium, Belgian Beer Festival in Japan, Ars Cameralis Festival in Poland, Electronic Beats Festival in Hungary, Waves Festival in Austria and Bratislava, Armani in Milan,…

The French album “Les Pieds Dans La Merde, La Tête Dans Les étoiles” was released in 2017 on ADP records.

Songs like “Lay down your blade”, “Before the sunrise”, “Birds”, “Mickey Remedy” and “I’m waiting for you” received a lot of airplay in Germany (Radio Eins, Flux fm) and L.A. ( KCRW radio). Remixes of “Before The Sunrise” by Dixon “The Magic” by Maceo Plex and “What Baby” by Douglas Greed became instant party classics all over the world.

After that “Here Is Where I Belong” was released in July 2019 on Sizzer Records, with remixes by DC Salas and Klangstof. Radio Eins added the original song to their playlist. The same year, Charlotte Adigéry invites the duo to play on a podium she curates at Pukkelpop Festival in Belgium.

In April 2020, “Roll With The Punches” and “Not Afraid”, two songs they wrote for Douglas Greed’s Album “Angst” were released on 3000Grad Records. The same month, “Innocence” a compilation of unreleased tracks and demos (recorded between 2010-2020) comes out, exclusively on Bandcamp.

Their latest EP “Dreams Stay Dreams” was released in June 2020 on Fayer Records. It includes remixes by Patrice Bäumel, Marcus Worgull, and Edu Imbernon.

The synergy between the two on stage is intriguing. Although they seem to come from opposite corners, their differences are complementary. The outcome of this recurring collision is the beating heart of their music. It’s no performance. It’s real. Intimacy. The truth without apologies. Dear world. From heaven to hell and back again. We love it. Because honestly. It’s keeping us awake.

‘Sweet Love’ will be released May 7th via Klub Kid Records: https://ampl.ink/jE9km
