Video Premiere: Joya Mooi – Tears (prod. Sim Fane & SIROJ)

Amsterdam’s Joya Mooi shares her new single and video ‘Tears’ ahead of her forthcoming album release ‘What’s Around The Corner’ in January. A leading voice in the modern R&B scene, Joya Mooi’s music aims to give insight into the experiences of a new generation from the African diaspora and spark change for the better. Her new album ‘What’s Around The Corner’ will delve into the theory of social change, boasting 16 tracks exploring patterns, reflection, identity and spirituality themes. Check out the Dylan Boerstra-directed video for ‘Tears’ below.

When filming ‘Tears’ we really wanted the meaning of the song (seeing the beauty in failure) to connect with the beautiful nature of Cape Town. We decided to challenge our selves and let go of control. Even further by shooting on 16mm film. I made a couple calls secured a location and just like that we where off. On the day of the shoot we where blessed with perfect weather which lead to perfect sunrise morning shooting and ended the day with one take of Joya covering the song ‘Tears’ in the middle of Cape Town city centre on the roof of a friends roof top bar. The film ran out as Joya stopped sing. It was synchronicity at its finest.

As she prepares to unveil the full project, her final offering before it’s released is ‘Tears’, a luscious new single about the relief that comes after darkness. A warped vocal sample lays the foundations for its hazy, forward-thinking soundscape, which is lifted by Joya’s signature heavenly tone. Its freeing sound can also be felt in the music video, as Joya is filmed dancing and taking moments of reflection at a variety of stunning locations in and around Cape Town, South Africa.
