Electronic music virtuoso Moderna, hailing from Berlin, unveils her latest sonic offering, “DIE4U,” marking the electrifying lead single off her much-anticipated album “The Future Is Among Us.”
The single “DIE4U” serves as a tribute to the legendary track “I Would Die 4 U” by Prince, echoing its eternal passion and creative genius. Moderna breathes new life into the classic with her distinctive interpretation, birthing it amidst the creative milieu of Berlin as a self-produced and self-written commemoration. Characterized by Moderna’s hallmark production—ethereal vocal layers with savvy use of pitch and spatial effects, the compelling undercurrent of a pronounced bass, coupled with the vigour of an electronic drumbeat—”DIE4U” resonates with deliberate and tantalizing kinetic energy, laying the groundwork for an entrancing night on the dance floor.
In tandem with the audio, a mesmerizing music video emerges courtesy of Moderna’s collaboration with avant-garde animator and video artist Alexander S. White. Drawing from the haunting charm of shibari imagery, White amplifies the vision with a distinct technique—projecting this raw material through a bespoke glass installation and accentuating it with layers of mist to craft a holographic illusion underpinned by light, lending an otherworldly ambience that amplifies the video’s abstract artistry.
Moderna shares on the video: “The footage was filmed in Mexico City in 2015 – the original vision was to be shot for the track ‘Dog Is Calling you’ it was meant to be of an industrial setting with shibari sequences, Moderna continues. “The camera work was done by Karenina Gomez and at the time she was going to edit it as well but unfortunately she unexpectedly passed away from an illness so the footage remained untouched for about 5 years and then one day I met with Alexander White who is an animator and we spoke about doing something with the footage and so he took over the project and we decided to use a new track of mine DIE4U it felt more fitting and more in line with where Moderna is as an artist. So we worked on it together of and on for about 2 years and now we have the final version that we are dedicating to Karenina and of course Prince from where the vocals of the track are inspired by.”
With a diverse and vibrant career stretching further than her notable solo projects, Moderna has co-created four EPs alongside Mexico’s illustrious Theus Mago. Not only has she demonstrated her remix prowess with contributions to major projects like “The Matrix 4” soundtrack, but she has also left her mark on the “Next Wave Acid Punx” compilation curated by Curses.
The upcoming single is poised for release under Moderna’s own label, “Brave New Rave,” which found its genesis in her widely acclaimed radio program broadcasted on KCRW Berlin in 2019.
