One of our absolute favourite pop visionaries is back, and today we are thrilled to host the video premiere of “Actress” by Sofie Royer right here at KALTBLUT. Serving as the magnetic centrepiece of her upcoming full-length album before/after, dropping this Friday via Stones Throw, the track is a brilliant, satirical anthem for anyone who has ever chased a dream, rehearsed a persona, or tried to book a role.

Directed by Grégoire Léon-Dufour, the visual translates Royer’s sharp lyrical wit (“I’m ready to read, I’ll do your favourite scene, win all the awards, cause I’m an ingenue, and the camera loves me”) into a cinematic fever dream. Sofie stars as an aspiring starlet catapulted into sudden fame after her breakout role. She sweeps the awards, basks in the flashbulbs, and quickly finds that the gilded promise of celebrity comes with a dark, identity-eroding price tag.

Royer has never been shy about her deep cinematic obsessions—regularly referencing Falco, David Lynch, and Rainer Werner Fassbinder in her lyrics, while evoking Giallo aesthetics, Sofia Coppola, and Bernardo Bertolucci in her visual universe. On “Actress,” that marriage of pop structure and cinematic obsession hits a high-water mark, using Hollywood metaphors to dissect romantic desperation and social pretence with effortless style.

Described by The Guardian as “one of Europe’s most perplexingly overlooked pop stars,” Royer teamed up with heavyweight producers Matt Cohn (SZA, Charli XCX), Jorgen Odegard (Sabrina Carpenter, BLACKPINK), and Eli Hirsch (Suki Waterhouse) to shape the sound of before/after. Blending French Touch grooves with intelligent, self-aware songwriting, she creates pop music that is as infectious on the dancefloor as it is razor-sharp in its critique.
