When a creative partnership works, it blossoms. Forged in the small hours following big nights, the quiet hours of cocooned downtime, and amongst the lived hours spent soaking up inspiration from their home city, ZULA is a project born of experimental experiences. With an EP scheduled for release in February 2021, lead single ‘Winter Blues’ charts the nonchalant abandonment of a failing relationship. Xenya’s acerbic R&B vocals lacing glue70’s phased-out and glitchy lo-fi beats to give cuffing season the stylish starting pistol it so dearly needs. Listen for sugar-sweet vocals whispering 5 am epiphanies over an inimitably glue70 beat: it’s all glitches and switches with space and breaks – every element considered, crafted, and curated.
“Winter Blues is about an unrequited call from your ex-lover in the early hours of the morning. It came out of one of our typical bedroom production sessions, throwing around ideas, riffing, and creating drum loops. I found myself playing around with a sample of one of my favourite musician’s tracks to see if I could fit it into the beat we had made. It all came together pretty quickly, as the whole track was pretty much inspired by the sample itself. Then, it was just a matter of adding the vocals that would drive the track.”
