Fashion Photographer Skye Tan found inspiration in the work of Robert Mapplethrope and Touko “Tom Of Finland” Laaksonen , whose highly inspired French clothing designer Jean Paul Gaultier since the start. From the late 80’s to the early 90’s, Mapplethrope and  Laaksonen were the center of attention in the press. Presenting strong and proud Queer artwork was considered scandalous and Jesse Helms famously showed their works in the Senate floor to fuel his argument against public funding for the arts in the United States.

House W NYC thrives in the uniqueness of the stories that comes with vintage clothing. Designer Jean Paul Gaultier has created world known references by refining the way he expressed himself on the catwalk. “Les Marins”, French for Marines, have inspired Gaultier through out the years from his first collections in the 1980’s with backless tops to his last couture show in collaboration with Glenn Martens from Y/Project’s showing embroideries of red corals on stripped fabric. This editorial includes more than 20 Jean Paul Gaultier pieces from House W NYC’s archive, mixing collections that spread 25 years appart.
