Mixtape: deep tan

Ahead of their upcoming tour in Germany this May, post-punk band deep tan release a mixtape inspired by the genre, stemming from their active involvement in London’s vibrant post-punk scene. Recently, deep tan returned from a tour alongside Queens of the Stone Age, covering 14 UK/EU shows, featuring stages such as Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome, Berlin’s Max-Schmeling Halle, and London’s O2 Arena, and also accompanied by the Australian punk band The Chats. Alongside their tour, they launched their latest single “xenomorph queen,” a track described as a “sensual punk bop” that delves into themes of matriarchy, queer parenting, and sapphic love, already receiving widespread airplay on BBC Radio 6Music, BBC Radio 1, and Radio X.

Original post-punk and minimal wave melts into angular, experimental art-rock, contemporary punk and EBM in this selection where tracks are unified by a shared, shadowy outlook. The mixtape – put together by Celeste and Wafah from the band – is a window into a range of influences that have helped shape deep tan’s sound. Missives from the void.

deep tan are known for their minimalistic and plain sound, which serves as a foundation for lyrical themes ranging from deepfake revenge pornography and gender-expansive ideology to narratives about furry hedonism. With a cynical and edgy approach, the three-piece band from Hackney performs extensively. They share the road with bands like Yard Act, BODEGA, and Nation of Language, and appear at festivals such as Latitude, Secret Garden Party, Truck Festival, Live At Leeds, Dot-To-Dot, and Wide Eyed Festival, among others. To date, deep tan have released two vinyl EPs: “creeping speedwells” in 2021 and “diamond horsetail” in 2022. They have also released a 7-inch record through the renowned London label Speedy Wunderground, produced by Dan Carey, and have been featured in prominent music magazines including NME, DIY, Clash, Loud and Quiet, The Quietus, So Young, Kaltblut, Notion, Dork, and Brooklyn Vegan. Their music is regularly playlisted on BBC Radio 6Music and Amazing Radio, with additional plays on NTS, Apple Music Beats1, Radio X, SiriusXM, KEXP, BBC Wales, and they have been spotlighted as one of Steve Lamacq’s BBC 6Music Spotlight Artists.
