How much of who we believe ourselves to be is warped by the crushing expectations we force onto our own shoulders? For Leipzig-based non-binary composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Ophelia Sullivan (they/them), that internal dissonance becomes the catalyst for sonic alchemy. Unveiling their new single “Captivate”, the introductory statement from their forthcoming second album The Hunger (arriving February 12, 2027 via Moment of Collapse Records), Sullivan builds an expansive landscape where post-rock, progressive metal, trip-hop, and experimental electronics bleed into one another.
Queer identity is often lived within the crosshairs of internalised pressure and the raw hunger for uncompromised authenticity. “Captivate” exists directly in that cold, existential clearing. The track opens with sparse, fragile textures and elongated reverb tails that evoke complete isolation, before slowly tightening the tension and erupting into an explosive wall of distortion, heavy percussion, and abrasive beauty.

This collision of hushed restraint and volcanic release mirrors Sullivan’s broader creative philosophy: challenging the sterile notion that an identity must ever be rigid, palatable, or devoid of contradiction. Across vocal fragility and crushing instrumental weight, Sullivan lays bare the agony of trying to construct an authentic self while wrestling down the ghosts of who you were told to be.
Accompanied by an evocative lyric video, “Captivate” serves as a bold, cinematic prelude to The Hunger, cementing Ophelia Sullivan as one of the most compelling voices bridging heavy avant-garde instrumentation with vulnerable, queer narrative art.
