Press Play: Hopium – ‘Leave’ (Official Live Video)

‘Leave’ marks the first original production in two years for London-based Australian singer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Hopium. After gaining worlwide attention with his 2014 breakthrough hit ‘Dreamers’, which has since been sampled by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth in their smash ‘See You Again’, Hopium has gone on to collaborate with Jia Lih on ‘Keep Talking’ and now returns with a breathtaking stripped-down clip for ‘Leave’.

Influenced by modern R&B, hip-hop, synth-pop and indietronica, ‘Leave’ tells a tale of control and manipulation in a relationship packed with one-sided, devastatingly cynical observations. From studying a degree in Psychology, ‘Leave’ showcases Hopium’s rare ability to write deeply personal and relatable lyrics. Discussing the story behind ‘Leave’, Hopium says, “I’d been through a bad breakup and at the time I felt stupid and like I’d been taken advantage of, so I was writing from the other perspective and trying to get in that mindset. Now I don’t think I’d write such a bitter song, but it’s how I felt at the time.” The skeleton of the song was written with Benji Miller and ex-Klaxon Jamie Reynolds in Soho before Hopium and Miller completed the record in a remote farmhouse in Normandy.

An artist of many talents, Hopium extends to collaborating on all visual media that accompanies the project from the concept to lyrics and production and the design of artwork. After being involved in various projects, Hopium is ready to give his music the push it really deserves. Leaving the small studio industry behind in Australia, Hopium travelled through China, Amsterdam, London, New York and Los Angeles before landing in Berlin where he lived for six months and pushed his productions to new levels with plans to build an immersive live show by the end of the year.
