Silver Otto Channels Urgency and Obsession in “I Really Need To Know”

Silver Otto builds “I Really Need To Know” from a sense of emotional urgency that is palpable throughout the entire track. The song reunites desire, obsession, and the need for answers, making it clear from the start that it is not seeking balance but pure intensity.

The origin of the project also explains much of that energy. Silver Otto, the alter ego of TJ Sonnier, was created as a way to break away from indecision and channel a more direct identity, which translates into the song’s sound through a luminous production that contrasts with its darker emotional core.

Silver Otto says that “(…) On some level, we are all deeply curious about how and what is out there for us, and I wanted to capture the desperation and joy that getting back to myself while being so tormented by my own choices had made me.”

Lyrically, the song leans on lines that point to an almost uncomfortable need for connection.

I love you I want you it hurts but I’ll haunt you
I’ll do whatever it takes to know
I’ll tease you I’ll taunt you if my shoes were on you
I bet you’d be yelling
Answer me, answer me Oh.

The video, meanwhile, is not conceived as a complement but as a direct extension of the song’s concept. The process behind it was long and erratic, with multiple ideas that did not fully land until director Kate Emerick stepped in and simplified the approach. Instead of building something overly complex, the video draws on clear cinematic references such as Psycho, Se7en, and Showgirls to visually ground that sense of isolation and desperation.

The result is a piece centred on solitude and personal exposure. The image of being alone in a room, with just enough energy to make impulsive decisions, becomes the visual axis.

Kate Emerick understands this dynamic and brings it into a space that connects with her own trajectory within the queer audiovisual landscape. For her, desperation is not a problem to solve but a state that reveals the need to be seen, understood, and validated.

“I Really Need To Know” works because it does not attempt to resolve what it raises. It stays within the question, within that constant need to know and to be recognised. It is a song that asks for answers while also showing what it means not to have them. That tension is where it finds its meaning.
