Track Premiere: Iris Ell – ‘Dysregulation’

Electronic artist Iris Ell teases the release of her upcoming EP Undergod (August 18th) with the single ‘Dysregulation’. After years of writing, singing and playing the piano during her childhood in France and the Middle East, Ell first discovered Paris’ vibrant techno scene while still in school. Her first releases were with Swedish producer sweeep on Stockholm’s Cherish Label and the international Sister collective, and introduced Ell’s unique sound, which combines shimmering, tightly constructed pop melodies with grimier, edgier club influences.

I wrote Dysregulation about that moment when relationships become a hopeless looping argument, when you’re so drained that communication is reduced to a game you both lose.

Undergod, made in collaboration with Italian producer Tuna Display, is her first fully-fledged project. Undergod’s title was initially a typo — a misspelling of ‘underdog’ in a conversation with an ex — but it stuck. To Ell, the phrase encapsulated “a mutual kind of destructive dependence”, where a lover has “put you on a pedestal but it’s breaking down.”

Undergod came together over 12 months, while Ell juggled writing and making music with her postgraduate studies in Neuroscience. Perhaps fittingly, Undergod is a nuanced, psychologically detailed work, which charts the ebb and flow of a toxic relationship.
