Yaya Bey, the genre-defying artist known for her soulful narratives and engaging musical landscapes, is set to enchant listeners once again with the release of her latest single, “Egyptian Musk,” featuring the talented NESTA. This alluring track is the second offering from her anticipated album, Fidelity, slated for release on April 17th.
The genesis of “Egyptian Musk” comes from a serendipitous encounter. Yaya recounts, “I ran into NESTA at an event the night before and invited him to a session. We had this really dreamy reggae track that sounds like something old with a fresh spin. I named it ‘Egyptian Musk’.” The title evokes a rich, sweet, and comforting scent, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in its nostalgic yet contemporary feel.
Delving into the themes of Fidelity, Yaya Bey explores what she describes as the “Three Deaths”: the personal, the communal, and the loss of innocence. In this album, she navigates her grief for her father, the legendary Juice Crew MC Grand Daddy I.U., while also confronting the industry’s often-overlooked disposability of Black artists. With every note, she crafts a powerful commentary that resonates deeply in today’s cultural landscape.
Yaya Bey’s artistry has garnered acclaim from prestigious platforms such as Pitchfork, KEXP, The Guardian, Rolling Stone, Clash, and The Fader, alongside airplay from BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 6 Music, RTÉ, Radio Nova, NPR, and community radio stations worldwide. As she prepares to share more of her vision through Fidelity, “Egyptian Musk” is a testament to her unique ability to blend personal narrative with broader societal reflections, making it a must-listen for music lovers everywhere.
