Titled “The Perfect Rose,” it was recorded in spring 2024 at Tropico Beauty Studio in Glendale, California. Before entering the studio, the song had been refined through multiple workshop sessions with guitarist Will Segerstrom, who also performs on the final recording.

Despite its length and complexity, the band played the song live in a single take, preserving the raw energy and emotion of the performance. In that small, wood-panelled room, the group tracked the song together with an upright piano leading the arrangement, Andrew Maguire on drums, Segerstrom on guitar, and Jay Heiselmann on bass. Additional elements were added afterwards. Cellist Cornelia Babbitt recorded her parts the following day, while flautist Elizabeth LoPiccolo later contributed flute passages to complete the arrangement.

The song originated during a drive from New York to California in the fall of 2022, undertaken in the aftermath of both physical injury and emotional loss. That journey, marked by isolation and introspection, shaped the song’s emotional landscape. Upon arriving at her sister’s home in Woodland, California, the composition began to take shape at the piano, guided by an internal vision of expansive instrumentation, with sweeping cellos and dynamic guitar arrangements.

“The Perfect Rose” is filled with emotive melodies. Guitars and drums work hand in hand, creating a cosy atmosphere. Ziemba’s vocals perfectly fit the upbeat nature of the single. There’s a sense of duality in the song, with calmness intertwined with chaos, showcasing that Ziemba is not afraid to display different facets, with each representing a distinct emotion.

The track mirrors its thematic concerns. It builds on repeating motifs that shift between major and minor tonalities, creating a sense of movement without resolution, as if circling the same emotional terrain from different angles. The structure ultimately returns to its point of origin, reinforcing the idea of an ongoing search. At its core, the song is driven by a longing for something elusive, whether beauty, meaning, or even perfection, leaving open the question of whether that pursuit is a source of inspiration or a quiet burden.

“The Perfect Rose” captures a moment in which Ziemba confronts the consequences of a life in motion, one without a clear sense of home, stability, or lasting connection. While the horizon appears full of possibilities, an undercurrent of doubt lingers, raising the question of whether constant reinvention is a form of freedom or a cycle that prevents true grounding. The tension between independence and the desire for belonging sits at the heart of the piece, wrestling with questions of purpose, connection, and identity.
