AER SCENTS handcrafted perfumes! Made in Berlin

“Good manners and good cologne is what transforms the man into a gentleman!” designer Tom Ford said. May I introduce you to a modern perfume brand from Berlin?! AER is proud to announce the launch of two new perfumes: AER Accord No. 05: White Pepper and AER Accord No. 06: Ylang Ylang. These two perfumes are joining AER’s range of hand-blended 100% botanical perfumes. #aspringmusthave

AER Accord No. 05: White Pepper
AER Accord No. 05: White Pepper is a challenge to the perfumery establishment; a unique, intense perfume that instantly demands attention. It is a classic fougère perfume brought up-to-date with an AER twist. A fougère is one of the five olfactive perfume families which, traditionally, blends a sweet top note with a Tonka Bean, Lavender and Oak Moss base. Accord No. 05 respects the traditions of this family but breaks with the typical formulation to create something much more herbaceous, warm and bold. The Accord No. 05 fougère is built around a warm, spicy core of creamy White Pepper oleo-resin and bright Elemi oil, then given a modern twist with the opulent addition of Immortelle oil from Corsica, all underlined by earthy French Oak Moss absolute – the classic fougère underpinning. Accord No. 05’s very dry nature is pushed by Tobacco and Hay absolutes, and then given a curious herbal twist with a touch of Sage Triloba oil. Main Scent Notes: White Pepper, Elemi, Immortelle, Galbanum, Oak Moss, Tobacco, Sage Triloba.

We make our perfumes in small batches at our atelier in Berlin Mitte. Our perfumes are made with love and made as well as we can make them. We do the blending ourselves –by hand, of course.

What’s the best way to apply perfume?

There’s no “best way”; some people spray it on their wrists, on their hair, on their bare chest, on the back of the knee… it’s down to personal preference. Scent rises; so spraying on your temples seems a waste. The perfume will last longer when misted on clothing (but beware of stains on very light clothes) and hair.

Should I rub my wrists together?

No, please don’t. The friction harms the scent. And you want a concentration of scent on the pulse points for optimum diffusion; so don’t spread it out.

AER Accord No. 06: Ylang Ylang
AER Accord No. 06: Ylang Ylang is the result of a happy accident; while experimenting in the Atelier, we built one of the Holy Grails of perfuming: a muguet accord, done with 100% natural ingredients. Accord No. 06 is a multi-faceted floral fragrance that is at once a soft, floral bouquet and a strong, sophisticated blend of unusual notes. First comes Ylang Ylang, a richly scented flower harvested on the Comoro Islands. Precious Jasmin Absolute and graceful Damask Rose Absolute from Turkey dance with an elegant Lavandin Absolute harvested near Grasse in the Heart Note. An Egyptian Violet Leaf Absolute gives the base note an ethereal green woody note, and Cinnamon Bark offers the fragrance an unusual, flirty warmth.
Main Scent Notes: Ylang Ylang, Jasmin, Damask Rose, Lavandin, Violet Leaf, Cinnamon Bark, Vetyver.

How long will the scents last on me?

This is a natural product, made with 100% natural botanical absolutes, so AER scents will not last as long as commercial perfumes that contain synthetics. How long they last are dependent on how warm and how oily your skin is your pH balance, and how much you spray. You can probably count on at least six hours, but feel free carry the bottle and re-spray throughout the day. If you want the scent to last a little longer, also spray your hair or clothing.

It smells different on me than on other people!

Yes, that’s right! That’s normal. There you are experiencing a natural perfume. Commercial perfumes are full of synthetics and designed to smell exactly the same on every single person. Our natural ingredients react with your skin and create something personal to you.

Why don’t they smell strong and loud?

AER perfumes are designed to have a smaller sillage (how far the scent carries) than a commercial perfume. The scent will fill your personal space, but not be a room bomb. If you want a larger sillage, use a few more sprays.

What does 100% botanical mean?

All our ingredients come from plants. We don’t use synthetics, we don’t use preservatives, and our perfumes are totally vegan.

Aren’t all perfumes vegan?

No. In fact, very few are. Some widely used ingredients like castoreum and civet require killing the animal to extract; ambergris (so expensive that it’s rarely used nowadays) and hyraceum (which is still commonly used) are passive animal waste products; lanolin from sheep and honey from bees can be collected without much harm to the animal, but none of these common ingredients is vegan. Tallow derivatives (from cow fat) are used in the extraction process for many flower and leaf ingredients. And commercial perfumes can contain a range of animal-derived colourants and alcohols. AER perfumes are 100% vegan.

Are AER perfumes organic?

No. Well… most of our ingredients are organically grown. Some of them are wild-harvested from wild- growing sources. One or two are traditionally farmed. We’re committed to working with our suppliers to provide sustainable, fairly traded ingredients of the highest quality, with a minimal environmental footprint.

Where does AER stand on sustainability?

Sustainability (along with scent quality, of course) is one of our key deciding factors when it comes to choosing suppliers. The perfuming industry has a rightfully deserved bad reputation when it comes to sustainability; we are hoping to show another way. When we use ingredients from rare (such as Indonesian Oud) or at-risk (such Indian Sandalwood) plants, we make sure that they come from sustainably managed forests, where these plants are lovingly cultivated for future generations’ use.

Are AER scents tested on animals?

Our perfumes actually do go through an allergen-testing phase… but on human volunteers, not unwilling animals

Does the perfume change over time?

No. But yes. Similar to fine wine, AER scents will age and get better with time. The ingredients mingle and the overall scent ripens and becomes richer and deeper, without becoming unexpectedly different. Our AER scents should last for at least 30 months after opening before the essential oils begin to lose their potency.

Does perfume go bad?

Not really. It can go cloudy if it gets too cold, or darken with sun exposure, but this won’t affect the scent quality. At room temperature and with exposure to UV light, all perfumes oxidise and begin to lose their potency after a few years. We flush our perfumes with argon gas so that there should be minimal oxidising before you open the perfume, so ours are guaranteed stable for 30 months from opening. Store your perfumes in the fridge if you really want to be anal about it.

Where do you make your perfumes?

All of our scents are conceived, blended, bottled and aged in AER’s laboratory in the heart of Berlin Mitte. We do the blending ourselves – by hand, of course.

Can I mix the AER perfumes together?

Yes, of course. Our perfumes are designed to work on their own or to be layered together. Mix and match and experiment for yourself!

Can AER perfume bottles be refilled?

Yes! Please return used bottles when you finish the perfume, and we will check the bottle, clean and sterilise it and use it again. Reduce, reuse, recycle.
