Backstage at GmbH: A 10th Anniversary Reflection on Politics and Fashion History

Congratulations to GmbH on celebrating its 10th anniversary. At Berlin Fashion Week, the brand presented a collection that reflects deeply on Berlin’s fractured fashion history, marking a decade in the industry. The collection draws a direct line between the city’s vibrant, cosmopolitan couture scene of the 1920s, which was systematically dismantled by the Nazi regime due to the systemic erasure of Jewish designers, tailors, and business owners, and the political responsibility of fashion today. GmbH incorporates historical elements into its designs, such as tailored collars inspired by archival garments from early 20th-century Berlin fashion houses like Clara Böhm, while also integrating actual archival pieces from the 1910s through the 1960s into the runway presentation.

The collection merges these historical couture references with the brand’s signature sleek, protective sportswear. The menswear pieces stand out as a strong point of the collection, successfully balancing structured tailoring with contemporary, functional design.

Ultimately, the presentation serves as both a historical reminder and a contemporary statement. By highlighting how Berlin’s early fashion community was destroyed by fascism, the collection argues against the idea that fashion can or should remain unpolitical, positioning itself as a form of cultural resistance against current rising right-wing extremism and the marginalisation of minority communities.
