The editorial is devoted to Lucy Renèe Mathilde Schwob, commonly known as Claude Cahun – a French activist and artist of late 20s. Not only was she a major figure as guardian of women’s rights and how the next few decades would have let them live, but also a dauntless risk-taker to already start living in that way – even before a following century came.
Claude was featuring her way of expression, living and personal beliefs through numerous faces. She was known of showing and exposing always a different part of herself and never did she used the same way in order to create it. As one of her absolute trade marks, Cahun was using an idea of mask – in her context, meant as a symbol of freedom and rights to be one’s self. Especially, when it comes to the gender definition.
Nowadays we could even consider her a very first leader of a Genderfluid Movement, yet in an era, in which a sex was meaning everything and a question “was a baby born a boy or a girl?” – was basically defining how your whole life is meant to be from now on.
Claude Cahun was a fearless woman, as so by means of her art, she managed to live her life on her own rules and in peace with her beliefs. Living in times of absolute mess when it comes to a politics, made her survive and get realized especially in her art. However the times were not in her favor, she was always faithful and accurate about what did she reckon was right and most relevant for her. That should be called a real trend-setting by far, since an artist like her got a piece of up-coming world to her life, of what was about to come to the next generations much time later…
