Dancing Without Borders: The Artistry of Ingeborg Kolstad

Ingeborg Kolstad floats through the air like a feather, only to suddenly drop like a stone, leaving a hollow in her wake. Her movement is a masterclass in physical storytelling. The Norwegian dancer and choreographer stepped away from the stage to make a powerful appearance in the music video for “Cassandra” by American singer-songwriter Nell Bryden.

Set in an open space, the video captures Nell surrounded by dancers whose bodies express emotion through abrupt, raw movement—a stirring display of contemporary dance that speaks volumes without a single word. The performance channels chaos, vulnerability, and a visceral sense of rebellion. This collaboration was made possible through choreographer Caroline Alter, who invited Ingeborg to join the project.

Despite her young age, Ingeborg has already built a remarkable career. Her breakout moment came in 2019 with Vi Ensamma, the opening piece for På Tå Hev at the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet. Alone on stage, she held the audience spellbound with a rich, vulnerable physical presence. The choreography by Klara Martensson and Jonathan Olafsson found its perfect vessel in Ingeborg. Sarah Da Fonseca, a prominent figure within the National Ballet, helmed the production.

That same year, she ventured into television, appearing as an actress and dancer in NRK’s comedy series Allerud VGS. She shared the screen with major Scandinavian stars like Annette Hoff, Christian Skolmen, and Lisa Tønne, among others. Directed by Oscar-nominee Hallvar Witzø, the show gave Ingeborg a new stage—this time in front of the camera—where her comedic timing and natural screen presence shone through.

In 2024, Ingeborg took part in Reinterment of the Ancestors, a powerful site-specific performance with Threads of Truth, held at the African Burial Ground National Monument in Manhattan. Not only did she perform as a soloist, but she also took on the role of dance captain, leading the ensemble with choreography that merged contemporary movement with Afro-diasporic aesthetics.

From classical theatres in Norway to New York’s public parks and music videos, Ingeborg Kolstad turns every performance space into its world. But if there’s one project that fully encapsulates her emotional and artistic range, it’s Cassandra. No words, no elaborate costumes, no gimmicks—just a body in motion telling a story of longing and rage, devotion and pain. And long after the music fades, her presence still lingers in the air.
