Dirt Miller’s succinct and mystifying

Photos by Dianne Copeland

His name alone carries the gravitas of his work and though he is young still, his eyes are beset by the tough walk that he’s walked up to this point. His image conjures up a true salt-of-the-earth Americana spirit; of the Itinerant guitarist with a bindle, of the ramblin’ western wizard you’ll chance upon a fateful sundown when your road has left you beat and destitute. Dirt’s haunting guitar is the all-encompassing clear mountain sky in the morning, and his vox is the ghost of a V8 roaring eternally like a spirit that won’t let go, coursing frantically up and down the asphalt veins that cross deserts.

Evoking what many of us are often unable to express or articulate, bringing familiarity and solace to our own journeyed stories.

In the crucible of his work, Dirt Miller forges something raw and unapologetic. He creates an alloy of Folk, blue, and Rock that sounds both timeless and in some strange way, ancient.

As a musician, you are a sound-smith and a noise maker- how do you connect “Troubled By Silence” with the rest of your work?

EACH OF MY SONGS SPEAK FOR ITSELF “TROUBLE BY SILENCE’ WAS HOW I FELT AT THAT PARTICULAR MOMENT.

The Desert seems like such an integral part of your identity as an artist. Why do you feel like you relate so much to that kind of place?

I ACTUALLY PREFER THE WATER AND FORREST BUT Death Valley IS INCREDIBLE IT WAS ONCE FILLED WITH LAKES AND FOREST TRESS. IT HAS HAD MANY LANDSCAPES THOUGH OUT THE MILLIONS OF YEARS  Death Valley REPRESENTS TRANSFORMATION.

What did you like best about working on this music video?

I DON’T LIKE CAMERAS BUT THE LOCATION WHERE WE SHOT THE VIDEO WAS BEAUTIFUL AND IT IS WHERE STAR WARS!

In the song you say that you’ve been at “war with your ego”, but you immediately follow that by saying that you’re “sick of all these people” – In the face of it, it sounds a bit like a sudden turn, could you elaborate?

IT’S REFERRING TO PUTTING OUR EGO ASIDE TO DEAL WITH PEOPLE IN LIFE THAT ARE FAKE.

Let’s talk a little bit about you as an artist. What makes you tick? How do think people come to understand what they can about Dirt Miller?

MUSIC MAKES ME TICK. PEOPLE CAN UNDERSTAND ME BY LISTENING TO MY MUSIC.

What do you feel characterizes you as a musician?

I WILL LET MY FANS DECIDE HOW THEY SEE ME. I TRY NOT TO CHARACTERIZE MYSELF.

What are the values and ideas you want to put forth through your work?

THE RAW TRUTH

I feel an undeniable melancholy in your work. Do you consider yourself a melancholic person at all?

NO.

What’s coming up next for Dirt Miller? what can we expect in the near future?

I JUST GOT SIGNED TO William MORRIS AGENCY AND I AM GETTING READY FOR A 2023 SUMMER TOUR AND A NEW 2023 ALBUM RELEASE AS I WRAP UP THIS WINTER WITH THE END TO MY SELF-TITLED RECORD, DIRT MILLER.
