My historical grandma’s mode of life

Introducing fashion brand Inga Skripka. Photography by Rasa. The model is Emilija Račkauskaitė. “This collection is part of my family history.
At the same time, I wanted to show the rich cultural heritage of Lithuania, which is often left behind in
the fast-moving production of things today.
It is also not uncommon to see parallels between tradition and conservativism,
which makes one wonder, if the two really go together, does tradition interfere with the ability to create?”

“I came into a close relationship with my heritage through the textiles of my grandmother:
it allowed me to form a new connection to Lithuanian mythology by incorporating facts and fiction,
most akin to questions of today and surreal visions. Together with this cultural hybridization,
I am trying to expose complex relations between tradition and modernization.”

Inga Skripka: “I was born in a small country in north Europe nearby the Baltic Sea. I earned a bachelor’s in painting at Vilnius Academy of Fine Art in Lithuania. After graduation, I moved to Germany where I began interdisciplinary studies.

“The life of Berlin has been full of new treasures to me and given me an opportunity to discover the works of Robert Wilson, Oskar Schlemmer, and Gunta Stölzl, as well. They have been a big influence on my work and on my future.”

“I founded the ‘Inga Skripka’ brand in 2015 and I began exploring my own design language. I’m interested in a Bauhaus sculptural quality of clothing, playing with silhouettes of shapes, often using rigid materials and experimental techniques. The flatness of most of the articles only allows the clothing to move in a stiff way — they are moulded to a specific shape, not to the wearer.

The fashion platform to me is more unfamiliar. Usually, I’m working with the performance of the theatre as a costume designer and on my own brand as an experimental platform. I do not call my works ‘fashion’ and myself a ‘fashion designer,’ but it’s a great honour that I may inspire interest as such.”
