Press Play: rei brown – Get Me Out

Tokyo-born and New York-based, the distinguished producer and artist rei brown continues his streak of enthralling, avant-garde aural landscapes with his latest offering, ‘Get Me Out’. Renowned for his exceptional creativity and versatility across all facets of his craft, rei brown further solidifies his reputation as a dynamic force in music with this new song. ‘Get Me Out’ is a collaborative effort, skillfully co-produced by Frankie Scoca, notable for his work with entities like NewJeans and dhruv, and crafted in partnership with lyricist JBACH, recognized for penning tracks for big names like Jason Derulo and the Barbie soundtrack. Together, they’ve shaped a narrative that truly resonates with the powerful emotional journey depicted by rei.

Speaking on the origin of the track, rei shares; “Get Me Out” was one of the first songs I made after Xeno. I had just gotten off of a series of tours, one of which, I had an episode of psychosis/derealization. Unfortunately it’s not a new experience for me either, I’ve had a bunch of ‘episodes’ or incidents for the past 10 years. It was impossible to communicate what I was going through to my friends, and worst of all, I still had to go on stage and perform most nights. I kind of went to sleep wondering how I even get through it all… As always it kind of just eventually got better, but I think when I was writing the chorus, I subconsciously just drew from that recent experience.”

Addressing pivotal mental health issues, ‘Get Me Out’ sees rei reaching out to the contemporary youth mired in personal psychological battles. By courageously sharing his vulnerabilities through his work, he aims to inspire transparency and candor amongst his listeners about their tribulations. This message is poignantly visualized in the song’s accompanying music video. The film, with its unique narrative conceived and orchestrated by Daniel Antebi, immerses viewers in a world marked by disquiet and distortion—a potent representation of the claustrophobia of one’s psyche. Coinciding with the track’s launch, the video is not just an artistic appendage but stands on its own merit, seeking recognition at renowned film festivals such as SXSW.

Daniel Antebi, a filmmaker of Mexican origins, has earned accolades for his directorial movie ‘GOD’S TIME’, receiving a Special Jury Mention at the Tribeca Festival 2022. His earlier short film ‘SOFT’, a candid exploration of his own experiences with sexual assault and a journey of queer discovery, garnered attention as part of the 2020 SXSW Film Festival and laid the groundwork for his feature screenplay ‘ON THE MAT’. Progressing to notable achievements, his script received the SFFILM Rainin Grant and was a focus at influential initiatives including the Sundance Screenwriter’s Intensive and Sundance Catalyst. In alignment with the video’s theme, he concludes with a mention of the Jed Foundation, advocating it as a supportive resource for mental health challenges.

Speaking on the music video, rei expresses; “The video is something I’m so excited about. Daniel and I were supposed to make a music video years ago but COVID happened and the whole thing got scrapped. During that time he went and directed a feature film while I put out Xeno, and I think we both grew during that time.  It feels somewhat serendipitous to be reconnecting on this.”

Expert cinematography by Liam Reardon coupled with the adept videography and editing of Jake Oleson introduce AI exploration in the filmmaking process, with tools like NERF/Luma AI, Runway AI, and Stable Diffusion. As conversations around artificial intelligence stir debates on its implications for the creative domain and the sanctity of intellectual property, Antebi commits to full disclosure of the methods and inspirations that shaped the video through its end credits.

Rei brown has a history of weaving deeply personal narratives into his soundscape, fostering connection and offering reflections that many can identify with.
