During Berlin Fashion Week, Marlon Ferry unveiled a collection that transcends mere fabric and stitches—a narrative steeped in the complexities of female experience and resilience. Comprising 11 stunning dresses, this collection journeys through the landscape of the female body, embodying the themes of self-protection and resistance against a world that can often feel harsh and unforgiving.
Inspired by his grandmother’s childhood during a tumultuous world war, Marlon Ferry’s collection begins with a pristine white dress, an emblem of innocence. However, as the collection progresses, it delves into deeper hues, mirroring the rising tides of anxiety and impending peril. By the seventh look, the palette shifts to deep black, invoking visceral emotions tied to destruction and turmoil—skin scorched, the world awash in red. Yet, from this darkness emerges silver—a harbinger of hope. The journey culminates in a resplendent white dress, now armoured and fortified by shades of black, symbolising a powerful readiness to confront adversity.
In a groundbreaking collaboration, the director duo KUSNU—Artem Zamashnoy and Ola Pankova—have translated this poignant narrative into an art fashion film, merging memory, reality, and the mythos of societal evolution. Shot entirely on Kodak Super8, the film breathes with the nostalgic imperfection of analogue—its flickering grain and shifting colours amplifying the essence of fragility while simultaneously exuding visual strength.
The film transcends the conventional runway experience, framing fashion as an existential performance that mingles narrative cinema with avant-garde aesthetics. Titled “The Third Veil,” it abstracts the designer’s creative journey into a meditative exploration of time, materiality, and identity’s fluidity, all while interweaving the rhythms of runway life into a commentary on the intricate layers of the fashion industry.
This 10-minute art piece marks just a fragment of a more expansive vision—a planned short film that aims to run between 20 to 40 minutes. Producers and supporters are sought to breathe life into this avant-garde fantasy, which poses an intriguing question: In a world where a woman feels the need for armour, could it be that her true strength lies within, propelling her toward transformation and the ability to uplift herself and those around her?
Set against a backdrop of biotechnological advancement and ecological remnants, the film introduces a compelling protagonist—a woman in her 60s who grapples with solitude, seeking refuge from a world outside that feels daunting. As she navigates her isolation, her inner power begins to stir, beckoned by cosmic signals urging her to embrace change.
“The Third Veil” is more than a celebration of fashion week; it is a philosophical exploration of what fashion represents in contemporary society. In an age of rapid production and digital saturation, KUSNU’s film returns to the tactile and the ephemeral, challenging the sanitised commercial aesthetics typically associated with fashion filmmaking. Instead, it revels in imperfection, rawness, and poetic abstraction.
Set in Berlin—a city where art and fashion collide with a unique energy—this film seeks to capture the profound shift in meaning between cinema, design, and reality.
About KUSNU
KUSNU, the Berlin-based art direction duo comprised of Ola Pankova and Artem Zamashnoy, stands at the nexus of experimental cinema, fashion, and poetic resistance. They envision cinematic odysseys where avant-garde myths and stark realities interweave in surreal dreamscapes, characterised by shimmering light, intricate textures, and the authenticity of analogue film. Their work is a visual tapestry where silence often speaks louder than words, crafting narratives rooted in body-memory and the quest for new mythologies.
Ola, with her background in architecture, brings a nuanced perspective honed through documentary cinematography. Her ability to create spaces brimming with human emotion and tension shines through in her work. Meanwhile, Artem’s journey from railway logistics to filmmaking speaks to the serendipitous nature of artistic paths—his experiences under renowned cinematography legends have shaped him into a compelling visual storyteller.
Now, as they navigate their shared exile in Berlin, KUSNU continues to forge politically and emotionally resonant images, exploring the themes of fragility, resistance, and transformation through innovative visual languages.
