“WE ARE BECAUSE THEY WERE” is a celebration of narratives left to us by generations past, and a recognition of ideas as relevant today as they are ancient.
The designs included in this series are rooted in the cultural symbols from the Basotho, Maasai, and Chokwe peoples, as well as modern writing systems of Mandombe (Congo) and Isibheqe (South Africa).
Unknown Union uses fashion as a vehicle for storytelling, responding to ideas preserved through art, culture and heritage. Each collection forms a “chapter” in Unknown Union’s journey. In collaboration with Unknown Union, these chapters are further amplified by artists working through their own media.
