Vi City’s ‘Hotels and Heartbreaks’ Is the Perfect Gritty Soundtrack for the Emotionally Disillusioned

Vi City is a multi-talented American artist who has made a name for himself in the world of music and film. As a rapper, songwriter, and producer, he has collaborated with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Nelly and Sir Michael Rocks. Vi City has also produced tracks for Young Money, working alongside the renowned producer Rich Skillz. But Vi City‘s talent doesn’t stop there. He has also written, performed, and produced his own music for the popular television show and film “The Entourage”, showcasing his skills as a versatile artist. As a writer and producer of music, Vi City is currently signed with Universal Music Publishing Group, one of the leading music companies in the world.

In addition to his music career, Vi City has also established his own film division called “Hundreds Entertainment”, which showcases his passion for visual storytelling. As the founder and CEO of Hundreds Entertainment, Vi City has signed multi-instrumental performing and singing artist Phoînix Keyz, demonstrating his dedication to supporting emerging talent.

Vi’s latest outing is a quasi-conceptual album centered around the shattering effects a heartbreak can have on a person’s psyche and spirit.

The project has been generating a lot of excitement since Vi City shared a preview of the single “Won’t Do” on Instagram. One of the standout artists in the project is Ari Stylez, who is featured on several tracks including “Angels Talk”, “Anguilla”, and “Won’t Do”. Additionally, other incredibly talented artists are also featured, such as Phoînix Keyz on the interlude “Room Service”, Vega Heartbreak on “Deuces & Waves”, and Kes Kross, a Grammy-nominated artist, on “Rearview”, which is the penultimate track on the album.

To say that “Hotels and Heartbreaks” sits at an exuberant crossroads of sound is kind of an understatement, because it makes that crossroad fully its own. From the cinematic intro of “The Check In” onward, Vi makes short work of his peers by ways of his gritty flow and the groovy antics of his beats, as we hear in “City Life” or “Anguilla”.

The album takes on the scenery of hotels as cold away-from-home transitory places where the mixture of familiarity and strangeness or not belonging reflect the emotional states of being disillusioned, disappointed, and empty when things just don’t work out.

The album does a great work of balancing hard, edgy sounds with introspective and even touching subject matters that condense its entire emotional load into a more universal and intimate space than what you’d usually expect from most hip-hop-centric albums. Vi City’s expertise as a producer and lyricist does him great justice when it comes to representing him as an individual with a strong identity beyond his work for and with other artists.

“Hotels and Heartbreaks” is surprisingly upfront and candid, but there’s nonetheless a distinct swagger or “put on” that Vi City transmits through his sound. The Bravado of Hip-Hop is taken to its most useful and productive realm, where you identify yourself with the resilience behind its intonation and grow to root for its dignified and brave statement that points towards a healthy amount of self-reflection.
