“Even if it’s just making someone feel the slightest emotion. Negative or positive, the intent is to feel” – In conversation with Sunni Colón

Los Angeles based R&B singer Sunni Colón has just recently released his latest masterpiece JúJú & The Flowerbug – a fusion of groovy, yet soft R&B beats paired with Sunni’s smooth voice. About the project, Sunni said: “I recorded JúJú & The Flowerbug with the intention to allow my creativity to flow with an infinite stream of consciousness. With the vast transformations in the world, I had to remain balanced in order to feel. The only way to filter is to feel.

KALTBLUT caught up with Sunni Colón to talk about his latest release and his pluralistic approach to music.

KALTBLUT: Thanks for taking the time for this interview. You’re just about to release JúJú & The Flowerbug. How are you feeling?

Sunni: Of course, thank you. I’m feeling fulfilled and inspired. Feels great to have it out in the world now.

KALTBLUT: Can you tell me a little bit about the release?

Sunni: JúJú & The Flowerbug is a record that derived from the many recordings from the beginning of lockdown. Like many of us, it was a really rough time for me with many real life occurrences so creating was my escape that eventually began my healing. I loved writing and producing it. It feels like every moment in the project was created by hand.

KALTBLUT: You said this release has taught you to approach music in a pluralistic way. Can you tell me a little bit about that process and what you mean by that?

Sunni: It’s important for me to remain open to all things. I’m a vessel as I am here. I took time to dive into all of my influences and also became susceptible to any new ideas or methods that came about. Unconfined by false parameters because, in turn, they may jeopardise the heart when contaminated.

KALTBLUT: How does JúJú & The Flowerbug compare to your debut Thierry Disko?

Sunni: They’re just different versions of myself. Different realms of my life. I believe I’m constantly growing as a being. Each project that is released feels like I’m getting closer to my ultimate purpose as an artist.

KALTBLUT: Your art is very positive with the intention on positively impacting society. Can you tell me a little bit more about that?

Sunni: I believe that’s our design as artists. Our intentions should be to influence society. Even if it’s just making someone feel the slightest emotion. Negative or positive, the intent is to feel.

KALTBLUT: You’ve collaborated with big brands before, such as Google, for example. Does working with giants like that impact your artistic vision?

Sunni: It definitely impacts the vision. For the most part, I leave highly charged and affirmed of my talents because I’m grateful for anyone who wants to work with me. Every win for me, grand or small, is a win.

KALTBLUT: If you had to describe your music in three words, what would they be?

Sunni: That’s hard to do, haha. Today I’ll say Satin Magik Ice.
