For years, Jozzy has been quietly shaping the sound of modern R&B. While she hasn’t always been front and centre, her writing credits include some of the biggest hits of the last decade—Old Town Road by Lil Nas X, ten by Fred Again, and Body by Summer Walker. A three-time Grammy winner and Diamond-certified songwriter, she has collaborated with industry giants like Beyoncé, Madonna, David Guetta, Pharrell Williams, and Black Coffee. But now, it’s not just her pen talking—it’s her voice. With Maybe, the first single off her debut album, Soundtrack 2 Get Her Back, Jozzy steps into a new era—bolder, more intimate, and fully in her lane.
We had the chance to sit down with Jozzy to talk about her latest release, the dynamics of modern relationships, and the urgent need for emotional accountability in a world where maybes have replaced clarity. In her words, people often shy away from saying what they mean—trapped in grey zones, afraid to feel deeply or to empathise with the other side of love.
“MAYBE” IS SUCH A POWERFUL SONG ABOUT MIXED SIGNALS AND EMOTIONAL ACCOUNTABILITY. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THIS TRACK?
“Maybe” is a big pet peeve of mine. People don’t always realise how frustrating it is. It gives false hope without real commitment. Imagine you’re on fire, and you ask, ‘Can you help me?’ and I say, ‘Maybe.’ You’d be pissed because, at that moment, you need action. “Maybe” can feel more disrespectful than a clear ‘no.’ At least with ‘no,’ you know where you stand.
THE LINE “DON’T TREAT ME LIKE A MAYBE” REALLY HITS HARD. IS THIS SONG BASED ON PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, OR DOES IT REFLECT A BROADER THEME IN RELATIONSHIPS TODAY?
This song is rooted in personal experiences—business and personal relationships. I’ve been guilty of saying ‘maybe’ too, so I had to hold myself accountable and be more intentional with my words.
THE PRODUCTION ON “MAYBE” FEELS SMOOTH YET COMMANDING. WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH BONGO BY THE WAY AND FREAKY ROB ON THIS TRACK?
Those are my brothers; everything we make together is crazy. Shoutout to them.
THE MUSIC VIDEO FOR “MAYBE” VISUALLY COMPLEMENTS THE SONG’S EMOTIONAL DEPTH. WHAT WAS THE CREATIVE VISION BEHIND IT, AND HOW DID YOU BRING IT TO LIFE?
The concept introduces the audience to this new era of me, Jozzy. It begins to lay out the story of not only my new album but also me as a person.
THIS SINGLE IS PART OF YOUR UPCOMING DEBUT ALBUM, SOUNDTRACK 2 GET HER BACK. HOW DOES “MAYBE” SET THE TONE FOR THE REST OF THE PROJECT?
It sets the tone because “Soundtrack 2 Get Her Back” is a full story from beginning to end. That’s why I created a stage play—to bring it to life and explain it in a visual way.
YOU’VE WRITTEN HITS FOR SOME OF THE BIGGEST NAMES IN MUSIC. HOW DOES STEPPING INTO THE SPOTLIGHT AS AN ARTIST WITH “MAYBE” FEEL COMPARED TO BEING BEHIND THE SCENES?
I’d choose singing my songs over just writing for others any day. And it’s not even about the spotlight—it’s about peace of mind. I don’t have to stress over artists, labels, or A&RS playing with my money. The truth is, a lot of labels don’t respect the hard work that songwriters put in to create the final product. I’m free now!
AS SOMEONE RESHAPING R&B FROM THE INSIDE OUT, HOW DO YOU HOPE “MAYBE” CONTRIBUTES TO THE EVOLUTION OF THE GENRE?
It’s about being vulnerable with your feelings and also not glorifying toxicity the way we often do. Yeah, I’ve had my moments, and I’ve been toxic before, but the truth is, I’m working on practising healthy love. And I want to reflect that growth in my music.
WITH “MAYBE” OUT NOW AND YOUR DEBUT ALBUM ON THE WAY, WHAT DO YOU HOPE LISTENERS TAKE AWAY FROM THIS NEW ERA OF JOZZY?
To all the beautiful straight women who think it’s all sweet coming to this side: Haha, just know it still takes effort, just like any relationship you’ve had before. It’s not perfect just because it’s different.
With this music, I want to bridge the gap between queer and straight listeners. Yes, I’m gay, but I’m an artist first. Don’t box me in as just a ‘gay artist.’ Let me love who I love, and let people from all walks of life connect with the music.
