#ModaLisboa LAB – AWAKE! Designer João Magalhães unveiled his new FW 20/21 collection in Lisbon. The collection returns to the essence of design: the search for form through the manipulation of materials, color and proportion. The Man/Machine duality is carried over from the previous season and inspires new dialogues, such as the one created between hand-made textiles and 3D art. Synthetic materials coexist with traditional fabrics.
The paradox between urban and traditional culture, where handicrafts merge with industrial, influences a DIY attitude in deconstructed cuts and customized pieces. We can find inspiration in the vibrancy and irregularity of Mexican street culture and in the beauty of the chaos, the improvised, the unexpected.
João Magalhães was born in 1988 and grew up between London and Lisbon. Early in his life, he shown great interest in the arts, which led him to study architecture and to specialized in fashion, exploring form and construction in his creations. In 2014 he created Morecco, which started as an accessory brand, but the evolution of the concept led to ModaLisboa a year later, with the first complete ready-to-wear collection for the fall/winter 16/17.
The designer explores an aesthetic universe marked by androgyny, the materials’ requirements and cut, by handmade techniques, from knitwear to hand embroidery. In March 2019, João Magalhães signs the first collection in his own name. His pieces continue to detach themselves from gender and age constraints, they are free of categorizations, but the designer is now exploring a new conceptuality, closer to what he envisions for one’s today wardrobe.
