MATRIARKA by Fábio M Silva

The highly anticipated lookbook for Fábio M Silva’s 4th collection is now available. Titled “MATRIARKA”, the collection draws inspiration from traditional regional Portuguese costumes and matriarchal figures in the artist’s life.

I was painting over a scarf that used to belong to my great grandmother and got really into the idea of how it was no longer a dated and traditionally feminine item and how it became a totally contemporary genderless piece. This led me to look at old family photos and archival footage of costumes from different regions in Portugal and by reinterpreting their patterns, prints and functionality, Matriarka was born

Constructed mostly out of vintage fabrics collected over the years, which have been hand dyed, painted or embroidered by M Silva, the collection’s ecological footprint has been kept to a bare minimum. The prints are, in true Fábio M Silva fashion, a mixture of folklore elements and pop iconography, including an inverted chicken, Britney Spears and a transgender reinterpretation of the paleolithic sculpture ‘Venus of Willendorf’.

The collection’s complete lookbook and one-of-a-kind pieces are now available on the artist’s website and webshop at fabiomsilva.studio.

A limited edition art book including sketches, unpublished photographs and fabric swatches is currently in pre-production, set to be released in 2020. Fábio M Silva is an interdisciplinary artist and designer based in Berlin, working on autobiographical deconstruction of identity and normativity concepts. Drawing influence from art movements Fluxus and Dada, their work is equally confrontational and sarcastic.
