About Suelen Romani

The photographer Suelen Romani stands out in the segment of national and international photography by engaging with the topic of female empowerment as seen through her lens.  Being of Brazilian and Italian descent, her personal background resurfaces as a crucial element of her professional identity.  She is active and inventive, and she participates in social debates and forums, specifically focusing on violence against women.  In highlighting these social injustices she hopes to bring about self-knowledge, acceptance and, above all, to give a voice to those who have been affected by such traumas.

Through the study of distinct forms of expression, and memories of family events, Romani developed a significant appreciation for the imagery signature.  Dismantling taboos and the deconstruction of stereotypes of the female body fuels the creative process of the Brazilian photographer, who feels strongly about the issue of the objectification of women.  She seeks to establish a new image and respect for the female body through her work and that this focus may effectuate positive change for this incredibly important topic.

Suelen is always on the move. In the repertoire, there is documentary photography of São Paulo’s first transsexual shelter for Getty Images, and a sustainable fashion editorial around vitiligo awareness. She has also produced, written, directed and photographed the fashion film ‘Remain’ currently in the circuit of fashion film festivals and the music video ‘Pain’ from Californian rapper Phreckle$.

While Romani’s passion for photography runs deep, she also studied other various art forms.  She studied art at the Central Saint Martins art and design school in London.  From there she pursued the study of cinematography, with a degree in cinema from the New York Film Academy and the International Academy of Cinema São Paulo, and also went on to complete a Master Class at the American Society of Cinematographers in Los Angeles.  She also studied performing arts and acting at the renowned William Esper acting studio in New York.
