Three years in the making, LA-based electro-pop artist RYL0 has delivered her debut full-length album, 5T4RP0W3R. Recently named by The FADER as one of the Black pop artists to watch, the New Jersey-born singer-songwriter and producer fuses grandiose pop songwriting with spellbinding, futuristic electronic instrumentals. Executive produced alongside Taydex (Joji, Alice Longyu Gao) and AOBeats (Slayyyter, LE SSERAFIM), the 13-track record pairs conceptual storytelling with a stark visual universe creative directed by RYL0 herself.
Constructed across three distinct acts, 5T4RP0W3R maps personal vulnerability, OCD, and spiritual ambition onto the framework of a modern hero’s journey inspired by Greek mythology. The narrative follows an Oracle who rejects a destiny assigned by Zeus, resulting in an eternal cycle of memory loss, explosive ascension, and ultimate rebirth.
“I was born with lights in my eyes / I was born to tell the truth / I was born to show the world the world through my point of view.”
— RYL0
Act I sets the stage with a cinematic opener, “Past Life (Prologue)” before diving into the psychological tension of “Prophecy” and “Omens.” Here, premonitions mirror real-world struggles with OCD and superstition, culminating in the synth-forward unravelling of “Trust The Process,” co-produced by Jordan Blackmon.
Act II charts the ascent. The umru-assisted, bass-heavy “Downfall” channels the fiery ambition of regaining one’s power, leading into the dance-pop grandeur of “Gold” and the album’s towering title track, co-written with Jesse Saint John. Across tracks like “Logos,” RYL0 flexes her versatility, shifting effortlessly into hip-hop-driven braggadocio at the height of her protagonist’s omniscience.
Act III deals in the inevitable aftermath of unchecked ambition. From the atmospheric burnout of “Downfall (Reprise)” and the Sophie Cates-co-written trip-hop descent “Power Trip,” the album moves toward its emotional core on “Lightning In A Bottle”—a euphoric, emotive moment of surrender.
“As I get older, world on my shoulder / Pushing a boulder, but it’s getting better every day. I’m easing out of the pain.”
— RYL0
Invoking the myth of Sisyphus, the album frames the endless loop of artistic pursuit—the climb, the glimpse of the summit, and the boulder rolling back down—against the realities of the modern music industry. The record closes on the summery two-step of “Odyssey” and the Jersey Club-inspired finale “Phoenix (Epilogue),” bringing the narrative full circle. It is a deeply personal, ambitious statement from an artist who treats pop music not just as entertainment, but as mythmaking.
