Take My Heart From Jakk Fynn: A Powerful Song That Invites Respect And Freedom

Transmasculine Latinx pop artist Jakk Fynn released the new single ‘Take My Heart’, a statement of freedom against the restrictions that society imposes on those it considers different. Some of that he reflects in his song with lines like ‘I’m just a world away/ sitting in my pain/ I guess I can’t trust my family/ They say time heals everything/I’ve been waiting for you to change.’

The song is a catchy pop track with overlapping vocals in the foreground and background that feels very light and allows the artist the necessary tools to deal with such a deep subject.

In a recent interview, he talked about all the obstacles he had to face until now. ‘Opposition from my family, pressures from labels, the idea that I had to present myself in any way other than who I actually am,” Fynn says. “These things never stopped me though; they just pushed me harder to find new ways to fight for my vision 100 per cent on my terms’, the artist recalls.

About the video, he explained that even when it symbolizes the binary, there are other things more significative. ‘It feels akin to a phoenix. I was once so at odds with my skin that a dress felt like violence. Yet now, “feminine” modes of expression won’t erode my peace or destabilize my sense of self. So sure, gender can be a very harmful construct, but don’t be afraid of the power you hold to reconstruct it.’

The LA native had to endure a tumultuous upbringing in a conservative household, and at those moments’ music was his solace. However, not seeing any trans artists on the music scene, he decided to contribute to filling that void, to empower people, particularly queer people, through his art. He’s carving his path not just for himself, but for others like him, proving that it’s all possible.

After having travelled through the world of music with different bands and groups, today he appears under the name of Jakk Fynn. “I found out that Jack was once used as an informal way to refer to a generic man or fellow, which serves as an affirmation to myself that I’m just another man.”

Fynn – on the other hand- is inspired by the character Finn from Adventure Time, whose kind, brave, and morally sound traits match Jakk’s own unassuming nature.
