AVOIDMONARCHY by Timna Weber and Avoidstreet

Introducing Timna Weber! A London-based sustainable textile and fashion designer. With the launch of her label, Timna proposes a new design system, challenging the wasteful approach that is the norm today. She offers garments as starting points rather than finished products with each piece designed for the possibility to transform and adapt with the wearer over time. timnaweber.com Instagram: @timnaweber

Avoidstreet uses discarded apparel to create street couture: customized ready-to-wear for site-specific interventions. Using upcycling as strategy and collaboration as a working method—the transatlantic looks blur the lines between styling and design.  Founded in 2017 by Graphic Designer Eduardo León. Fashion becomes a tool to generate content — providing clothes, jpegs & lyrics.

AVOIDMONARCHY is the most recent collaboration between Amsterdam-based designer Eduardo León and London-based fashion designer Timna Weber: a limited- edition collection of hybrid repurposed garments where each piece has been sourced and upcycled individually. The collection will be available in the beginning of 2020 in selected shop in Amsterdam, London and Milan. The annual King’s Day celebration in Amsterdam including its open-air flea market, cheap orange accessories, and feeling of canal side debaucher is both the background and primary resource for the design and styling of the pieces. Meeting as Artists- in- Residence at WOW Amsterdam, Eduardo and Timna’s collaboration started two years ago, when they discovered a shared fascination for building their own image archives, in which artworks and artefacts from the Renaissance period featured heavily. This archive sparked the creation of a collection of upcycled clothes, ending in an artistic performance during Fashion Inside Out in Amsterdam.

AVOIDMONARCHY is a continuation of this collection into a more wearable and elaborate version, once again made of an eclectic mix of flea market leftovers and clothing abandoned in the WOW Artist-in-Residence laundry room. It is about cutting up the old and putting it back together into something new, a kind of “rebirth”. It makes sense for Avoid Monarchy to feature prints inspired by Renaissance imagery of traditional paintings.

The collection pieces were altered and customised using different techniques and graphics: digital prints, heat-pressed fragments of branded plastic bags and packaging from Dutch supermarket chains, and embroidered words quoted from the local scene: From TRASH, TRASHURES, and STUFF to SPEED, WASTED, and TRUE POTENTIAL.

Following their design ethos of repurposing the old, Eduardo and Timna use upcycling as a method for artistic sampling: the urban environment, its history and present, is the raw matter for their thematic clothing lines.
