One to watch: IN PRIVATE STUDIO

May I introduce you to Berlin-based brand IN PRIVATE STUDIO?! Founded in 2019 the young brand is using sustainable organic cotton for their products. Their production is based on the standard 100 by Oekotex® which is eco friendly and high quality at the same time. We had a chat with creative director of IN PRIVATE STUDIO Michael Späth. HOME ALONE IN HOLLYWOOD

KALTBLUT: Tell me how you first became interested in fashion and why you decided to become a fashion designer?

I was ALWAYS interested in fashion. I remember that I was always reading my moms magazines as a kid and dreamed of being a part of that world. When my classmates was hanging out and playing soccer I always used to be at home reading vogue and watching pop culture documentarys.
People like Karl Lagerfeld and Anna Wintour became my close imaginary friends.

I grew up at a farm in bavaria so magazines and TV shows were my only escape to the fashion world. I always wanted to be a designer but was never brave enough. After school I moved to munich and worked for magazines and fashion tv shows. For my current job I am spending a lot of time in Los Angeles. During that I started to sketch and made designs. Finally last year I took the chance and started my brand. Best decision ever.

KALTBLUT: Where do you find your inspiration for your collections?

Pop Culture! I am OBSESSED with Hollywood and all these icons like Cher, Prince, Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley but also newer people like Paris Hilton or Justin Bieber. Most of my ideas are coming while watching documentarys or concerts. I always listen to music while designing.
One song or quote can inspire a whole collection.  Also I am very inspired by the work of Thierry Mugler, Gianni Versace and Jeremy Scott.

KALTBLUT: Where do you feel the most inspired?

Alone at home on my bedroom floor listening to old 80s/90s music.

KALTBLUT: Tell me about your new collection. What are the main ideas and design concepts you have adopted?

It’s my first collection and it’s titled “LONELINEES KEEPS ME RUNNING”. It describes the feeling when you grow up with a dream that you want so bad so it hurts. You move away from your family and friends, work day and night, spend nights alone at hotel rooms and fly around the world. If you are reaching a goal you want more. Even if that means that you are lonely. Because the loneliness is like a kind of fuel to your success. It motivates you to keep going.

The whole loneliness thing was always a big part of my life and it always inspired and pushed me to work harder. Also every piece of the first collection is telling it’s very own story about anxietys, life as an introvert, goals and fame.

KALTBLUT: Do you have any artists, musicians, celebrities etc who you would love to dress? Or who inspires you as a designer?

Definetly CHER! She is the biggest icon and a true rolemodel. She’s so bold and authentic and always speaks the truth. She changed the music industry so many times and is still a fashion icon which shows me that age is just a number. Also I would love to work with Justin Bieber because I think that he would really understand the whole “loneliness keeps me running” vibe.

KALTBLUT: How would you describe the local fashion scene/industry in Berlin?

To be honest I can’t say so much about the Berlin fashion industry because I am living in my own world. I am a day dreamer and not very connected to the berlin scene. I always prefer being alone with delivery food to this hip fashion partys. But I absolutely love the boldness and realness of Berlin.

Sometimes it’s very dark but it’s always brutal honest. I love the creativity of the people and that there is a place for everyone. I never fell in love with a human but I definetly fell in love with Berlin.

KALTBLUT: If you had an unlimited budget a la Balmain, what would you make and why?

I am a big fan of the 90s fashion scene where fashion was still FUN and exciting.  That’s why everything would be over the top I guess. I would book all the supermodels and create huge campaigns and billboards. Even bigger fashion shows.

In the moment my budget is small that’s why we started with shirts and hoodies. I would definetly do a higher variety. Fun dresses and jackets. Big over the top looks for red carpets.

I would try to entertain the people with everything I create.

KALTBLUT: How would You describe the IN PRIVATE studio customers ?
Creative. Metropolitan. Day-Dreamer.

KALTBLUT: What would you say makes IN PRIVATE studio stand out against then other brands?

I guess that we are telling a story and we are very dedicated and passionate. I dont do fashion to get rich or to do something trendy. I do fashion because it’s my biggest passion and I was born to do it. Every collection and every piece is 100% authentic and is telling a very raw and real story.
I think that’s that our thing.

KALTBLUT: What advice would you give to people who want to experiment more with the clothes they wear?

Just do it. Dont be afraid what other people will might think. Do it and wear it with confidence. Don’t wait until it’s a trend and everyone is doing it. If you are scared start small. Start with a watch which is a bit more fashion. Or shoes. Then go for the total look. But never wear something that makes you feel uncomfortable.

Always be the realest version of yourself. If the look is real and authentic it’s always in fashion.

KALTBLUT: If IN PRIVATE studio was an ice-cream, what flavours would it be?

A huge portion of Vanilla and Pistachio with colorful sprinkles and cookies in star-shape. We are minimalistic and classy BUT always over the top and glamorous.

KALTBLUT: What was the last music track you listened to?

I am listening to music ALL THE TIME that’s why this is a very hard question. I love the new songs of LAUV (modern loneliness) + SAM SMITH (to die for).  But the last song I was listening to was “Edge of Seventeen” by Stevie Nicks.

KALTBLUT: Finally, what can we expect to see from IN PRIVATE studio in the near future?

I am finally back in Berlin next week. Then we will start with some live events like private dinners and hopefully some concert/event stuff. I am currently working on that. Also there will be a new shirt coming out this spring which is super fun. And my second collection for autumn is mostly done.

And there is a secret project of mine which I am very very excited about it. I have so much stuff in my head and I hope I can do a lot of it. I barely sleep because I am so excited to bring all my ideas to reality.
